Apart from cotton, other crops have also been damaged in dozens of villages facing waterlogging due to heavy rains last week. Hundreds of houses have been damaged due to the rain. In view of this, the Punjab Government should issue orders for special girdawari without any delay so that timely compensation can be given to the victims' families. This view was expressed by MLA Sandeep Jakhar.
He said that the farmers of the sub-division are facing natural calamities and water mismanagement for a long time. Canal water was not supplied in past few months due to erosion in Sirhind feeder. Temperature reached 47-degree centigrade.
Due to insufficient water reaching the tail-end villages, many Kinnow orchards dried up and the plants have to be uprooted. When there was an absolute need for canal water for Narma cotton, the state government was unable to manage it. Now due to change in weather, heavy rains have dashed the hopes of the farmers.(SUBHEAD)
The water was still to be drained out from many places. Punjab Government should immediately issue orders for special girdawari in the affected areas and it should be ensured that on the basis of the survey farmers get proper compensation on time so that their family life is not affected.
He said that in the past, arrangements have been made to clean the drains in April before the onset of monsoon, but the present government has not floated tenders on time in this direction, due to which there is a problem in the drainage of rain water through the drains that emanate from neighbouring districts. This problem should be resolved soon.
