To the delight of sports fraternity of Chandigarh, a long awaited 8-lane synthetic Athletic Track (International Athletic Federation Approved) had been conceptualized for Chandigarh and foundation stone of the same was laid on Sunday by Sh. Dharam Pal, IAS, Honorable Adviser to the Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh at Sports Complex, Sector-7, Chandigarh.
This is the first synthetic Athletic Track conforming to International standard and Athletes of Chandigarh and surrounding states will be benefitted with this Athletic facility as the entire National and International competitions are conducted on synthetic Athletic Track and the local athletes will be able to do requisite practice at the same surface.
The athletic track in the Sports Complex, Sector-7, Chandigarh was constructed during the 1970s. The athletic track was re-laid with cinder during 1997-98. It is having 7 lanes (400m) & is consisting of old/conventional specifications like cinder tracks. There is no athletic synthetic track in Chandigarh having a synthetic surface and therefore the budding athletes could nor have proper exposure & training to compete in international tournaments.Sh. The 400 metre 8 Lane synthetic track will be built in place of existing old/conventional tracks along with other facilities like Pole-vault Set up, Water Jump hurdle, Shotput throwing circle of dia 2.135m, Discuss/Hammer throwing circle of dia 2.50m, Aluminium kerbing-400m standard track and Javelin Throw.
Dr. Vijay Namdeorao Zade, Secretarty Finance, Sh. Harjit Sandhu, Director Sports, Sh. C.B. Ojha, Chief Engineer, Dr. Sunil Ryat, Joint Director Sports of Chandigarh Administration along with officers of Chandigarh Engineering and Architecture Departments, Sh. Harjinder Singh, and Sh. Jaspinder Singh, President and Secretary of Chandigarh Athletic Association were also present on the occasion
