For the last four decades, Department of Transfusion Medicine is supporting the thalassemia patients from all over the Northern region for their regular transfusions at every 2-3 weeks interval. Presently 305 thalassemia patients are on regular transfusion therapy and they receive around 10000-12000 units of high quality leucoreduced and NAT tested blood ,per year free of cost.
In addition, they are being provided thorough clinical testing and dedicated medical follow-up by PGIMER Chandigarh. Due to the regular transfusion support and medical care provided by PGI, Chandigarh, the life span of these thalassaemic children have increased many folds as compared to other parts of the country and these children are excelling in various spheres of life.
The oldest thalassaemic receiving registered with us is about 51 years and he is a successful businessman. A number of our thalassaemic children have excelled in their careers as engineers, lawyers, teachers, nursing officers and government employees and are well settled .
(SUBHEAD)(MOREPIC2) One of our patients, Mr. Sukhsohit Singh is an Indian Revenue Service officer which an elite category of bureaucrats and another thalassaemic child, ParulKaur, is pursuing PhD in Psychology and Sociology. Two of them are Medical Graduates, one of them DrPyasi is pursuing MS in General Surgery and other Dr. Thind is a practicing doctor in USA.
Parul Kaur was diagnosed with Thalassaemia Major in 1997 when she was 11 months old and received her first blood transfusion just 2 days after her first birthday. Regular blood transfusions and follow up at PGI Chandigarh gave her enough time to concentrate on studies and she was amongst the toppers in her school days. She graduated in Business Studies and did her Masters in Sociology. She completed first of law studies at Panjab University Chandigarh but qualified as Junior Research Fellow in Sociology to pursue PhD in the year 2019. She is currently studying the social status of Thalassaemics and their families of Punjab state. She also teaching post graduate students in Panjab University.
Sukhsohit Singh son of Wing Commander (retired) M. S. Bawa and Mother (Mrs)Gursharan Kaur was diagnosed with thalassaemia major in 1985 when he was only one and a half years old. Regular medication and blood transfusions were their prescriptions for his good health.
Sukhsohit braved the disease for about 25 years and did not face any mental or physical disorder. Not only was he regular at school, but his attendance was also exceptionally high. After completing B Com (Hons) in Business Economics, he pursued MA in Public Administration, and he qualified for the UGC's Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). He said clearing the civil services exam and is currently posted in Indian Defence Accounts.
