Retired Director General of Punjab Police S M Sharma struck a double gold, each in the events of tennis men singles (70+) and men's doubles (60+) in the World Police and Fire Games,WPFG-23 in in Winnipeg, Canada.
S M Sharma has also been selected to the National Team of Superseniors (70+) to represent India in the World Superseniors Tennis Team Championship which will be held in Mallorca, Spain in the month of October this year.Sharma is currently Vice-President of Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) and in this capacity also he takes keen interest in the development of tennis among youngsters in Chandigarh as well.
In singles semifinals, Sharma defeated a Hungarian player Jozsef Juhasz in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 and in the finals he overpowered the challenge of Indian player Sastry Krishnamurthy 3-0 (conceded) who developed cramps during the game and had to concede the match.
In the men's doubles final also Sharma and his Indian partner Srinivas Reddy defeated an American pair of Robert Schaffner and Victor Beard in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
This is a hat trick for Sharma to win gold medal in singles in the last three WP&FG, first in Chengdu China in 2019, second in Rotterdam Netherlands in 2022 and third this time in Winnipeg Canada. WP&FG are conducted once in two years, but the version of 2021 was postponed by a year due to Covid.
