A 7-day inter-school basketball tournament ‘Sardar Bhagwant Singh Memorial Basketball Trophy (BSMBT)-2023 kicked off at Sports Complex, Sector 42, Chandigarh here on Saturday.
The tournament was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by the Chief Guest Prabhjot Singh, International Hockey Player, who was accompanied by HS Mamik, Chairman, Vivek High School and Harbina Randhawa, Principal, Vivek High School, Mohali. During the occasion students also performed ‘Saraswati Vandana’, which enlivened the event.
As many as 72 teams from 25 schools from the tricity, in the categories of both Boys and Girls are competing in the basketball tourney. The students are participating in the age brackets of Under-12, Under-14 and Under-17 Boys and Girls, and the tournament is being played under the rules and regulations of the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) on a knock out basis.
In the opening match of the tournament of Girls (U-14) category; Saupin’s School, Sector 32, Chandigarh defeated St. Peters School, Sector 37, Chandigarh by a narrow margin of 19-16. In another close match, Learning Paths School, Mohali registered a 19-16 win over Delhi Public School, Chandigarh.

Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, Chandigarh humbled Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, 34-15.
In the Girls (U- 17) category, Vivek High School, Sector 38, Chandigarh drubbed Gurukul World School, Mohali with a huge margin, 24-4. With 12 points, Kashvi from Vivek High School was the top scorer for her team.
In the Boys (U-12) category, St. Kabir School, Sector 26, Chandigarh defeated Saupin's School 32, Chandigarh, 22-10. While in the Boys (U-14) category, Shishu Niketan Chandigarh drubbed Amity International School, Mohali by a huge margin of 24-8.
In the Boys (U-17) category – Strawberry Fields High School, Sector 26 Chandigarh drubbed St. Joseph’s School, Sector 44 Chandigarh, 49-28. Uday from Strawberry Fields scored the maximum points 33 and was the top scorer for his team.
Vishal Sharma, HOD, Sports Department, Vivek High School, Mohali briefed, “A total of 8 matches were played on the first day. The quarter finals are slated for Oct 18 and Semi-finals for Oct 19. The finals will be 6 in number 2 each –boys and girls for each of the three age brackets and shall be held over Oct 19 and 20.”
