CHANDIGARH BUILDING COLLAPSED, MAJOR TREAGEDY AVERTED, DISASTER MANAGEMENT TEAMS AMONG DC INSPECTED BUILDING

CRIMINAL COMPLAINT SHALL BE REGISTERED AGAINST THE PRIVATE OWNER OF THE COLLAPSED BUILDING AND ALSO SHOW CAUSE NOTICE SHALL BE ISSUED AGAINST THE ARCHITECT WHO STARTED WORK WITHOUT APPROVAL OF THE REVISED BUILDING PLAN.

A building (Mehfil Hotel owned by Late Sh. Harmohan Dhawan) spread over S.C.O. 183-185 in Sector 17-C, Chandigarh collapsed in the wee hours on Monday  The building was evacuated and cordoned off a few days before the collapse by Chandigarh Administration as it was considered vulnerable and dangerous for inhabitation. No one was injured as the area had been cordoned off for the past week after cracks were detected in three load-bearing pillars.

Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh Sh. Nishant Kumar Yadav himself inspected the site today morning.

Considering the impact of the collapse, the building adjacent to the collapsed building, i.e. S.C.O. 181-182, Sector 17-C, Chandigarh is also vulnerable and requires immediate inspection of its stability and strength.

(SUBHEAD)Therefore, under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the Deputy Commissioner- cum – Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority gave direction that till the time the building spread over S.C.O. 181-182, Sector 17-C, Chandigarh is inspected by the concerned authorities for its structural stability and a clearance certificate is issued in this regard, entry into and around the building is strictly prohibited for safety of the general public.

Chandigarh Administration has roped in NITTTR Sector-26 Chandigarh for conducting the structural audit to assess structural stability of S.C.O. 181-182, Sector 17-C Chandigarh. The Senior Superintendent of Police, U.T., Chandigarh has been asked to take necessary action to evacuate and cordon off the building.

Criminal complaint shall be registered against the private owner of the collapsed building and also show cause notice shall be issued against the Architect who started work without approval of the revised building plan.
