A meeting of the District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) was convened on Tuesday, under the Chairmanship of Sh. Nishant Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, UT Chandigarh, to review and update the status of various road safety initiatives across the city.

The meeting was attended by the SSP/Traffic & Security and representatives from the UT Engineering Department, Municipal Corporation, Architect Department, Urban Town Planning Department, State Transport Authority, Transport Department, Health Department, and all Deputy Superintendents of Police/Traffic, among others.

The Committee reviewed progress on key road safety initiatives, including auto rickshaw pick-up points, cycle track segregation, ATC signal installations, CCTV repairs, road re-carpeting, pedestrian safety measures, dedicated heavy vehicle lanes, “No Honking” zones, and traffic calming works at major intersections. The meeting primarily focused on enhancing pedestrian and cyclist safety, with a key emphasis on the installation of pedestrian and cycle signal lights at all major locations. Key decisions were taken on improving cycle tracks, pedestrian paths, signages and markings. It was decided that Purav Marg will get a dedicated cycle track.

(SUBHEAD)The Chairman directed the officials of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh to install road infrastructure such as yellow markings, plastic bollards and appropriate signage in the middle of Vigyan Path at the dividing road of Sector 5/8 in order to implement it as No Overtaking Zone.

The Committee also emphasized the need to increase the number of ambulances in the city from the current six (06) to twelve (12) under the 112 Emergency Response Scheme to ensure quicker medical response during road accidents.

The SSP Traffic & Security, along with DSP Traffic (R&D), presented findings from the recent Road Safety Dialogue-cum-Workshop conducted by the Traffic Police. The report addressed traffic congestion at five key locations and fatalities at five black spots, with actionable insights aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing accidents.

The findings of the comprehensive survey conducted by Chandigarh Traffic Police regarding the pending road engineering works such as road markings, traffic signages, table tops, rumble strips, pelican lights, blinker lights, and tree pruning, to support more efficient and safer traffic management across the city, were also presented during the meeting.

The Committee emphasized the importance of timely execution of these engineering works and instructed the concerned departments to ensure their completion on a priority basis to enhance the safety of all road users.
