In a major crackdown on illegal arms smuggling activities in the border belt, the Counter Intelligence (CI) Ferozepur has arrested an alleged weapon supplier and recovered five Glock pistols along with live cartridges from his possession. The sophisticated weapons were allegedly smuggled into India through cross-border channels for further supply to criminal elements.
The arrested accused has been identified as Lakhwinder Singh, a resident of village Khehra Ke Uttar in Ferozepur district. Police said the accused has a criminal background and had been released from jail nearly a month ago.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said that preliminary investigations have revealed that the recovered weapons were brought into India through cross-border routes and were intended to be circulated further through an organised network. He said the police are probing both backward and forward linkages to identify all individuals associated with the module.
Sharing operational details, AIG Counter Intelligence Ferozepur Gursewak Singh said that acting on reliable intelligence inputs regarding the movement of a weapon supplier, the CI team launched a secret operation in the Kulgarhi area and apprehended the accused. During the search, police recovered five .30 bore Glock pistols and four live cartridges from his possession.
Probe conducted so far has revealed that the accused was allegedly acting on the directions of his handler and was to deliver the weapons to ground operatives linked with criminal gangs.
Police said that more arrests and recoveries are likely as the investigation progresses. In this connection, FIR No. 103 dated May 25 has been registered under Section 25 of the Arms Act at Kulgarhi police station.
