Former councillor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, Shakti Prakash Devshali, strongly condemned the misleading, opportunistic and malicious politics being spread by the Congress and other opposition parties after the Supreme Court upheld the validity and constitutionality of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and preserved the Election Commission’s powers. He accused them of campaigning to discredit democracy.
He said the parties that from day one misled the public by sowing confusion, fear and lies about the SIR should now apologize to the nation, because the apex court has made it clear that the Election Commission acted within its jurisdiction.
Devshali said, “The politics of the Congress and its allies is founded not on facts but on rumours, distrust and vote-bank calculations. Even after the Supreme Court made it clear that the SIR is not unconstitutional and that its purpose is to cleanse the electoral roll, their opposition exposes their anti-democratic mindset.” He alleged that opposition parties fear electoral cleanliness because a transparent voter list undermines their opportunistic politics. He said the public now understands who wants to strengthen democratic institutions and who only spreads confusion for political gain.
He also said the SIR aims to make the electoral roll purer, more transparent and more reliable. Spreading confusion about this important process is not only an injustice to democracy but also an insult to citizens’ rights. He urged all opposition parties, including the Congress, to abandon negative politics and instead offer constructive suggestions while respecting the legal process.
Devshali said the Congress and its allies oppose every step that would strengthen electoral integrity. This attitude shows their concern is not for democracy but for their narrow political interests. He clarified that the public now sees through such politics and will give a fitting reply to those who spread confusion. Expressing full faith in the Election Commission, the administration and the judiciary, he said the SIR process should be completed fairly, transparently and in accordance with the prescribed rules. He appealed to all voters not to pay attention to rumours and to stay aware to protect their voting rights.
