EARTHQUAKE TREMORS FELT IN HIMACHAL PRADESH AND MAHARASHTRA, NO DAMAGE REPORTED

Face2News/New Delhi

Mild earthquake tremors were felt twice each in Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra on Friday, causing concern among residents but resulting in no reported loss of life or property.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), two earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 struck Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh within a span of about 90 minutes. The first quake occurred at 6:36 a.m. at a depth of 5 km, while the second was recorded at 7:59 a.m. at a depth of 10 km.

Similarly, Maharashtra’s Nasik district experienced two tremors. The first earthquake, measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale, occurred shortly after midnight at 12:05 a.m. at a depth of 5 km. The second quake, with a magnitude of 3.4, was recorded at 5:32 a.m. at a depth of 3 km.

A day earlier, Leh in Ladakh witnessed two earthquakes. The first measured 5.5 magnitude and struck at 6:05 a.m., followed by a 4.3 magnitude tremor at 9:54 a.m. Both originated at a depth of 10 km, with no major damage reported.

Seismic activity has been reported frequently across several parts of India in recent weeks, including Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.

Experts note that regions such as Delhi-NCR, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand fall in seismically sensitive zones and remain vulnerable to stronger earthquakes.

Earthquakes occur due to the movement, collision, or shifting of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface, releasing energy that causes ground vibrations.

Authorities advise people to move to open areas during an earthquake, stay away from buildings, trees, and power lines  and follow safety guidelines to minimize risk.
