FEROZEPUR OBSERVES PEACEFUL “BANDH” IN SUPPORT OF SANITATION WORKERS

The Punjab bandh called in support of sanitation workers evoked a widespread response in Ferozepur on Thursday, with major markets, private schools and several private establishments remaining closed. Government schools and most government banks, however, functioned normally.

The bandh remained peaceful throughout the day, with no untoward incident reported. Protesters also persuaded a few businesses and banks that had opened to shut down.

Ravan Ambedkar Mission National President Deep Dashanan condemned the alleged police assault on sanitation workers in Barnala and demanded that the government regularise contractual sanitation workers and fulfil their pending demands. Aadhi Dharam Samaj president Sham Lal Shama and social worker Chandan Bhatt also extended support to the protesting workers.

SP (D) Manjeet Singh said adequate police arrangements had been made across the district to maintain law and order. He said police remained deployed at key locations and the bandh passed off peacefully.
