NO EUPHORIA FOR DIWALI AS ABOHAR FACES SERIOUS CHALLENGE FROM GARBAGE DUMPS

Raj Sadosh/Abohar.

Even when the festival of lamps and lights was a few days away Abohar misses euphoria for Diwali.

District Magistrate, in exercise of powers vested in her under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Protection Act 2023 (Section 144 of the old CrPC 1973), has directed to ensure adequate arrangements in advance for the prevention of diseases caused by accumulation of garbage, filth and dirty water in vacant plots in private possession/ownership within the limits of District Fazilka.

But, people find garbage littered around the state and central govt. buildings including educational institutions, parks and other places of essential services. The vacant plots owned by the Local Bodies in Nai Abadi and other residential areas are overflowing with garbage thereby engulfing roads as well.

The sanitation workers, including the garbage collecting rehris staff and those deployed in the parks, are on strike due to the murder of Ajay Kumar who was shot outside Valmiki Mandir Dharamshala on September 27 and succumbed a few days later. His family and supporters have been staging an indefinite sit-in outside the Civil Hospital mortuary.

They were not allowed to move out on Sunday when a delegation led by MLA Sandeep Jakhar and Mayor Pooja Wadhwa sought permission to meet CM Bhagwant Mann. They demand action on the statement given by Ajay at the hospital but it was not done.

Also, an accused in the murder has not been arrested so far. A pall of gloom descended on Sant Nagar that had witnessed the brutal murder of Bhim Tank of the same colony in December 2015. Among the accused who were convicted and awarded life sentences were liquor baron Shiv Lal Doda and his nephew Amit Doda.
