VIKRAM DITYA SHARMA/FEROZEPORE

A brazen daylight murder in the heart of Makhu town triggered panic on Sunday after two motorcycle-borne assailants allegedly shot dead a shopkeeper in the busy main market before escaping from the scene.

The victim, identified as Gurcharan Singh Gaba, owned the well-known Gaba General Store situated in the town’s main bazaar. The attack took place at around 12.30 pm on Monday, when the assailants reportedly arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at Gaba from close range. After firing multiple shots, the attackers sped away, leaving the victim critically injured.

The incident caused chaos in the crowded market, with traders and passersby rushing towards the spot after hearing gunshots. Gaba was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead shortly after he was brought in.

The murder sent shockwaves across Makhu and adjoining areas, with residents expressing concern over the deteriorating law and order situation. Following the incident, senior police officials , including SSP Bhupinder Singh reached the spot and launched an investigation. Police teams have started examining CCTV footage from nearby establishments and are collecting evidence to identify the assailants and establish the motive behind the killing.

Condemning the incident, DCC President and former Zira MLA Kulbir Singh said such crimes have created fear among the public. Talking to the mediapersons, he alleged that criminal elements have become increasingly fearless and demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the murder.

SSP Bhupinder Singh said multiple angles are being investigated and efforts are underway to trace the accused.”Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses”, he further added.
