Raj Sadosh/Abohar.
The sanitation system of Abohar city has completely collapsed as a strike by the sanitation workers of the Municipal Corporation has completed two weeks by now. Heaps of garbage have formed in most parts of the city. The worst situation is that of the garbage dump located near Nehru Stadium, where the dirt and foul smell has made life difficult for the local people. BSNL, Main Post Office, Abohar Club and Govt Model High School are located near the dump.
Nearby residents said that due to rain water filling the garbage dump, it has started rotting and its strong smell is spreading far and wide. The situation is such that the garbage has spread to the roads and people have to pass through this passage. With mosquitoes and flies growing fast, the possibility of spread of infectious diseases has also increased. Due to the lack of cleaning for a long time, there are piles of dirt everywhere. People demanded that keeping in mind the health-related issues, the regular cleanliness system should be restored as soon as possible.
Narender Sharma, a resident, said that for the last two weeks, the door to door garbage collection has been completely stopped by the MC. Homes are filled with garbage bins and under compulsion, citizens themselves are taking the garbage to the dump and throwing it away. There was a lot of anger among the people, they demanded the Punjab government to immediately streamline the cleanliness system.
