Kumari Selja demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, saying that public confidence in the impartiality and independence of a constitutional institution like the Election Commission is the foundation of democracy. She alleged that the manner in which the Commission is functioning under the present Chief Election Commissioner has raised serious questions about its impartiality and transparency.
She said, “The Chief Election Commissioner should resign. When questions are raised about the electoral process, accountability must also be fixed.”Targeting the Centre, Selja said, “Whose power is behind them? It is the Government of India, the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. We say all of them are accountable. If not today, then tomorrow, everyone will be accountable.” She said Congress would continue to raise its voice for the independence of the Election Commission, a fair electoral process and the credibility of democratic institutions.
