The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) during its ongoing drive against corruption in the state, has apprehended ASI (local rank) Kamaljit Singh posted at Women’s Police Station, Police Lines Sangrur, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs. 7,000/-.

Disclosing this here today, an official spokesperson of the state VB said the above-mentioned accused has been arrested based on a complaint lodged by a resident of Bhawanigarh, district Sangrur.

He informed that the complainant faced a matrimonial dispute, following which his wife was living separately. His wife had subsequently filed a complaint against him, his father, and his brother at the Women’s Police Station, Sangrur. The matter was being investigated by ASI Kamaljit Singh. The accused ASI demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 for presenting the challan of the registered case in the competent court.

The complainant had already paid Rs 3,000 as the first instalment of the bribe to the accused ASI and promised to pay the remaining Rs 7,000 shortly, he added.

Unwilling to pay the remaining illegal gratification, complainant approached the VB range Patiala. Acting on his complaint, the VB team laid a trap during which the accused ASI was arrested red handed while accepting bribe money of Rs 7,000/- from the complainant in presence of two official witnesses.
