Naresh Kumar/Sangrur

A woman allegedly conspired with her brother and his friend to kill her mother-in-law by strangling her in Sheron village under Cheema police station in Sangrur district, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on July 24, while the alleged conspiracy came to light after the deceased woman’s brother raised suspicion over her death. Police said they registered a case on August 25 and solved the blind murder case within four days.Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Sunam, Harwinder Singh Khaira said the deceased, identified as Baljit Kaur, was allegedly killed after the accused pressed a pillow over her face and strangled her with a towel.

According to police, the accused allegedly tried to make the incident appear to be a natural death or a case of robbery, initially preventing suspicion from falling on them. The case was registered on the complaint of Baljit Kaur’s brother Jagjit Singh, son of Karnail Singh, who expressed doubts over the circumstances surrounding his sister’s death. Acting on his statement and preliminary investigation, Cheema police initiated a probe.

During the investigation, police arrested the deceased’s daughter-in-law Jasvir Kaur, her brother Gurwinder Singh and his friend Harmandeep Singh.

Police said Jasvir Kaur had allegedly hatched the conspiracy and involved her brother Gurwinder Singh, who subsequently joined the alleged plan with his friend Harmandeep Singh. Police also recovered the motorcycle allegedly used by Gurwinder Singh and Harmandeep Singh during the crime, DSP Khaira said.A court has remanded all three accused in three-day police custody. Police are questioning them to establish the exact motive behind the murder and ascertain the circumstances and domestic dispute that allegedly led to the crime.
