A 31-year-old woman was allegedly murdered in a hotel room on the Bathinda-Chandigarh highway near Tapa in Barnala district, following which the accused, who was reportedly in a relationship with her, fled the scene, police said on Saturday.
The police have registered a murder case against the accused and launched raids at various locations to arrest him.
The deceased has been identified as Jasvir Kaur, wife of Manga Singh, a resident of Badra village who was currently living in Tapa Mandi. She was a mother of two children.According to preliminary information, the accused, Amandeep Singh, had checked into the hotel and taken a room. Jasvir Kaur subsequently arrived at the hotel to meet him. The two were reportedly in a relationship for a considerable period.
After taking the room, Amandeep Singh allegedly told the hotel owner that he would return after collecting his belongings and left. However, he did not return even after a considerable period. When the hotel manager opened the room, he found Jasvir Kaur lying dead in a pool of blood. The woman reportedly had injuries caused by a sharp-edged weapon. The exact circumstances and cause of death will be established through further investigation and the post-mortem examination, police said.
On receiving information about the incident, a police team led by DSP Tapa Jaskaran Singh Brar, SHO Amrik Singh Grewal and post in-charge Kulwant Singh reached the spot. The police took custody of the body and sent it to the mortuary in Barnala for post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, residents of Tapa Mandi urged the police to conduct regular inspections of hotels situated along the Bathinda-Chandigarh highway, claiming that people they described as suspicious frequently visited such establishments. They said regular checking of hotels could help prevent criminal incidents and offered to cooperate with the police in the effort.
DSP Jaskaran Singh Brar said the case appeared to be linked to a personal relationship and that the police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder.
Acting on a statement given by the deceased’s husband, Manga Singh, son of Ram Chand, the police registered a murder case against Amandeep Singh, son of Pyara Singh, a resident of Badra village.
Raids were being conducted at various locations to apprehend the accused, while further investigation was underway to establish the motive behind the crime, the DSP said.
