‘Nar Seva Narayan Seva Samiti’ chief, Raju Charaya, a state awardee—has expressed outrage over the police’s handling of a case involving an unidentified young man’s body found about eight days ago in the Malukpura sub canal along Abohar’s Hanumangarh Road. The body remains unidentified, and the police have yet to conduct a post-mortem examination.
Raju Charaya stated that the body—found with its head, hands, and feet severed—strongly suggested a case of murder followed by the body being dumped in the canal. The deceased was wearing black trousers, and the body’s decomposed state made identification difficult; the police had initially arranged for preserving it for identification and post-mortem purposes. However, Charaya alleged that despite eight days having passed, the police have neither got the post-mortem conducted nor handed the body over to the NGO for cremation.
He remarked that the police administration fails to act seriously regarding the identification of unidentified bodies. He argued that the police should have informed police stations not only in Punjab but also in neighbouring states to aid in identification.
Expressing his indignation, he cited a recent incident in Indira Nagari where a body found in the bushes was reportedly handed over to the family by the police administration without a post-mortem, after the family had been traced. He noted that in his 26 years of running the organization, he had never witnessed the police handing a body directly to relatives without obtaining prior approval from the SDM. He blamed the police administration for shirking its duties and showing no interest in investigating cases. Police did not immediately respond even when the social media today highlighted the NGO’s assertions.
