SEED FARM ABOHAR RESIDENTS FEEL UPSET DUE TO DRUG ADDICTS

Raj Sadosh/Abohar

The body of an unidentified man was found lying in front of a shop this afternoon in the Seed Farm area of Abohar—a locality notorious as a hub for drug abuse. Police arrived at the scene and moved the body to the mortuary for identification and a post-mortem examination. Eyewitnesses reported that the deceased had been walking unsteadily—appearing intoxicated—alongside a companion a short while earlier; while the companion left the area, this man collapsed and subsequently died.

Surjit Kaur, a resident, said that two youths were passing by her shop while staggering under the influence of drugs. Neighbourhood residents tried to chase them away; one youth fled, but the other—too intoxicated to move—collapsed right in front of her shop. By the time passerbys checked on him, he had already died. The woman described the dire situation caused by drug addicts in the area, noting that people come from far and wide to purchase drugs there, making life hell for the residents. She added that if anyone complains, the addicts attack them, and the situation is also having a detrimental effect on their children.

Chhinder Kaur, another resident, stated that drug peddlers have ruined the lives of their children, yet the police administration fails to take strict action against these traffickers. The presence of drug peddlers is leading to an increased mortality rate among the local youth.

Hardev Singh, a resident of the neighbourhood, remarked that the government has failed to curb the drug menace. He noted that while drug abuse was previously limited to youths and adults, even minors are now falling into the trap of addiction and ruining their futures.

Station House Officer (SHO) Maninder Singh said that the body of a 40-year-old man was found on the street. The cause of the death will be determined by post mortem examination.
