An impactful academic workshop on the topic “Designing Competency-Based Questions” was organized for B.Ed. third-semester students at DAV College of Education, Abohar. The event was conducted by the School Internship Program in-charges: Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, Dr. Anjana Dhawan, Dr. Arshdeep Singh, and Dr. Manika Prabhakar.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Ajay Khosla, provided the students with a detailed overview of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, learning outcomes, and the concept of competency-based assessment. He explained that the objective of education in the present era is not just to impart factual knowledge but also to foster critical thinking, logical reasoning, analytical skills, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to effectively apply acquired knowledge in real-life situations. Therefore, questions should be framed in a manner that allows for a proper assessment of students’ actual understanding and competencies. Through simple and practical examples, he demonstrated the process of creating various types of questions, including case-based, source-based, scenario-based, image-based, application-based, and those requiring Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS).
Students also engaged in hands-on activities to create competency-based questions themselves and presented their work for discussion. Dr. Gurpreet Kaur conducted the proceedings. Officiating Principal Dr. Vijay Grover remarked that such workshops play a crucial role in familiarizing future teachers with emerging educational trends, the objectives of NEP 2020, and modern assessment systems.
