A woman was allegedly shot in the head on Saturday afternoon during a property possession dispute opposite a girls’ college.in Sector 42, Chandigarh, The victim, identified as Manvinder Kaur, a resident of Sector 19, Chandigarh, sustained serious injuries and was rushed for medical treatment.
According to police, the incident occurred around 1 p.m. when Manvinder Kaur arrived at the property to take possession of her house in compliance with a court order. Police personnel and a court representative were present at the site to facilitate the execution of the court’s directions.
During the possession proceedings, advocate JPS Chadha, who was allegedly occupying the property, reportedly opened fire from the balcony of the house using his licensed double-barrel gun. The bullet struck Manvinder Kaur in the head, causing her to collapse on the spot.
Police immediately apprehended the accused from the scene and secured the area for investigation.
DSP Dheeraj Kumar, who reached the spot after the incident, stated that the property had earlier been rented out to advocate JPS Chadha. The owner had been seeking to regain possession, but the tenant was allegedly unwilling to vacate the premises.
The DSP said that on Saturday, Manvinder Kaur arrived with a court official and Chandigarh Police personnel to enforce the possession order. The team initially knocked on the door, but it remained locked from inside and was not opened.
Meanwhile, Dhruvansh Pratap Singh Chadha, son of the accused advocate, disputed the police account of events. He claimed that his family possesses valid court orders permitting them to remain in the property and alleged that the possession attempt was unlawful. According to Dhruvansh, around 20 people, including uniformed and plainclothes personnel, forcibly entered the premises and assaulted his 67-year-old father. He further alleged that his father, who has practiced law for more than four decades in the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Supreme Court, was targeted unfairly.
He claimed that the family had paid six years’ advance rent to the landlady and had also obtained a court stay order, which, according to him, legally entitled them to continue residing in the house.
Dhruvansh further alleged that police and the landlady acted illegally and attempted to break open the door. He also accused the DSP of misrepresenting the facts, asserting that a large group of people, not merely two individuals, had arrived at the property.
Police have launched a detailed investigation into the shooting and are examining all legal documents and claims made by both parties. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
