Punjab is all set to celebrate “Jal Diwali – Women for Water, Water for Women” from Tuesday to 9th November, 2023. This significant campaign has been initiated under the flagship schemes of the Government of India – Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), in partnership with the Ministry's National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM). This was stated by Local Government Director Uma Shankar Gupta.

Giving more information, Local Government Director, Uma Shankar Gupta said that The campaign's Phase I involves visits to 10 Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) across the State of Punjab. Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) will be invited to these WTPs to gain insights into the water infrastructure, the functioning of Water Treatment Plants, and water testing facilities. Additionally, the campaign emphasizes promoting the involvement of women through articles and souvenirs created by Women SHGs. State and city officials from AMRUT and NULM will facilitate these visits to WTPs.

(SUBHEAD)On the first day of the campaign, a team from Municipal Corporation, Bathinda, conducted a visit for 30 women from SHGs who wore blue attire. They were taken to the 1.5 MGD WTP at Bathinda, where they received a firsthand exposure to water treatment processes. This provided them with a deeper understanding of the crucial steps involved in delivering safe and clean drinking water to households. They were also briefed on water quality testing protocols.

As a gesture of appreciation, the women from SHGs received blue bags, water bottles, steel glasses, and refreshments.

This “Jal Diwali – Women for Water, Water for Women” campaign aims to empower women, raise awareness about the importance of water, and highlight the vital role they play in ensuring access to safe and clean drinking water for all.
