Punjab Govt. suspended Amritsar Vigilance SSP Lakhbir Singh following serious allegations linked to a multi-crore tender scam. The action was taken after complaints from a construction company and a senior IAS officer raised questions over the manner in which an investigation was being conducted.
The case is related to Rs. 55-crore development tender in Amritsar’s posh Ranjit Avenue area. Despite the massive allocation, no development work was carried out, while crores of rupees were allegedly misappropriated and distributed among several individuals.
Tender was meant for sewerage and street lighting projects. Allegations of awarding contracts to favoured parties have surfaced, and the role of a social activist is also said to be under scrutiny.
Lakhbir Singh was appointed as SSP Vigilance in April 2025.He had led the team that arrested senior Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia on June 25, 2025. His suspension within just nine months of appointment has sparked intense discussion in administrative and political circles.
Meanwhile Vigilance Bureau in a statement said, in response, appropriate disciplinary action has been initiated. Lakhbir Singh, PPS, who was previously posted as SSP, Vigilance Bureau, Amritsar, has been placed under suspension for unauthorised interference in matters outside his official domain. As per the orders, during the suspension period, his headquarters will be the office of the Director General of Police, Punjab, Chandigarh.
