(MOREPIC1)(MOREPIC2)(MOREPIC3)NEW YORK: The Italian pair of Lorenzo Sonego and Andrea Vavassori ousted ninth seeds Rohan Bopanna of India and Matwe Middelkoop of Netherlands 7-6 (7), 6-2 in the doubles first round match in the $27,915,200 US Open here. The match lasted one hour and 38 minutes.
The first set was evenly contested but the Italian pair managed to win the set in tie-breaker. In the second set Bopanna and partered were broken in the first and fifth games before wrapping up the set and match at 6-2.
In the mixed doubles first round sixth seeds Bopanna paired with Zhaoxuan Yang of China.They were upset by Canadian Gabriela Dobrowski and Max Purcell of Australia 7-5, 7-5 in 69 minutes.
Fifteenth seeded Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini defeated Nikola Cacic of Serbia and Ramkumar Ramanathan of India 6-4 6-4 in the doubles round of 64.
