Ms. Sonia Gandhi, President of the Indian National Congress was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate for second round of questioning today. Inputs from various sources indicated that senior functionaries/ supporters of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) may hold gatherings/ demonstrations at Akbar Road to show their solidarity with their leader.

Owing to the law & order situation and sensitivity of the matter, a letter was again sent to the Organizer, AICC to inform that large gathering at around Akbar Road, New Delhi cannot be permitted as prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC are in force in New Delhi District. They were also informed that only AICC office functionaries/ staff would be permitted into the office after due authentication by AICC volunteers.

Adequate police arrangements were put in place in the New Delhi District to maintain law & order and avert any untoward incident.

At about 11:00 am, a large number of the AICC workers started gathering at various locations i.e. Akbar Road, Man Singh Road, Vijay Chowk, Janpath, etc. and started protesting.

Some  MPs of Congress party including Rahul Gandhi started a march from Parliament to Vijay Chowk with other supporters. When stopped by police, they started protesting near Vijay Chowk.

The protestors were appropriately warned about the prohibitory orders in force in the area and repeatedly requested to disperse from there but they continued the protest, thereby violating prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC. The protestors were, therefore, detained under 65 Delhi Police Act in order to maintain law & order in the area.

Some protestors were also detained under 65 Delhi police Act from Akbar Road and other places. An incident of putting a private Motorcycle on fire was reported near the Claridges Hotel, New Delhi during the day. Appropriate legal action is being taken into the matter.

Total 259 persons including 57 MPs were detained under 65 Delhi Police Act and Intimation about detention of  MPs/MLAs is being sent to the respective competent authorities.
