Raj Sadosh/Abohar.

By hoisting the National Flag at the 80th Independence Day of the country at Abohar Municipal Corporation, BJP’s Pooja Wadhwa became the first woman chief of the civic body here to have such privilege. She was elected Mayor on July 21 after a majority of the councilors approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The function witnessed an unprecedented presence of women true to the spirit of women empowerment.

Abohar had got the first Municipal Committee in 1923 when Udmi Ram, Udey Ram, Niamat Rai Ahuja, Buta Ram Narang, Ghulam Mohammad and Shamsuddin were elected as its members. Before that a civic managing committee was formed with three members and then it emerged as Notified Area Committee in 1908 with twelve members. For a long time, no woman was elected to the MC.

And now, Pooja scripts a history by becoming the first female head when women have fifty percent strength in the Corporation. She adds a golden chapter by hoisting the Tri-Color.

MLA Sandeep Jakhar and Mayor Pooja Wadhwa today motivated officials, political and social activists to introspect and follow the principles of Dr BR Ambedkar to ensure a society free of corruption, caste and creed consideration.

Hundreds of students presented group dances and songs. Pooja Wadhwa accepted an invitation to try a few steps in folk dance Giddha that attracted heavy applause besides cash prizes for the budding artists. Programme, coordinated by Harinder Bedi, was conducted by Mangat Verma. Former Mayor, Vimal Thatai, earned rich appreciation for monitoring the arrangements.
