On August 15 in village Khubban, suspected “drug addicts” launched a lethal attack with sharp-edged weapons on four people—including three brothers—after they objected to the theft of a mobile phone. One of the brothers died today while undergoing treatment in Bathinda.
According to reports, Sagar, of village Khubban, allegedly stole Hardeep’s mobile phone. Hardeep contacted Sagar through other villagers regarding the matter. Sagar reportedly admitted to stealing the phone but demanded Rs 1,000 for its return, but Hardeep stated he did not have the money. An altercation involving verbal abuse ensued between the two parties. Sagar, along with his brother Sameer, then brutally attacked Hardeep using sharp-edged weapons, inflicting deep wounds on his body.
Hardeep’s brothers, Sandeep and Sikandar, along with another individual, arrived at the scene; Sagar and Sameer allegedly injured them as well. They were admitted to a government hospital for treatment. Hardeep was subsequently referred to Bathinda due to his critical condition.
Police arrived at the scene, but Sagar and Sameer had already fled their home along with their father Sunil, uncle Ajay, and grandfather Sant Ram. Based on the statement of the injured Sikandar Singh, the Wahabwala police registered a case against Sagar, Sameer, Sunil, Sant Ram, and Lathan Ram under Sections 115(2), 118(1), and 3(5) of the BNS. The police apprehended Sagar, Sameer, and Sunil, while Sant Ram managed to escape. Following Hardeep’s death, the police today added the charge of murder to the registered case and initiated further proceedings. Villagers demanded drug peddling should be strongly checked.
