The Food Safety Department has seized 910 kg of suspected milk cake and 300 kg of khoya from a sweets manufacturing and storage unit on Sekha Road in Barnala district and sealed the premises, officials said on Friday.
The action was part of a special drive launched by the Health Department to check food adulteration during the festive season.
Food Safety Inspector Charanjit Singh Sahota said a special checkpoint was set up at Handiaya Chowk around 5 am on Friday, where a delivery van carrying sweets was stopped for inspection.
Following questioning of the driver, the department’s team reached a godown on Sekha Road and conducted a raid, he said.
According to the inspector, the sweets were allegedly being prepared in unhygienic conditions. The milk cake was being supplied to the market at Rs 250 per kg, raising suspicion about its quality and possible adulteration, he said.
Bags of skimmed milk powder, tins of vanaspati ghee and refined oil were also found at the premises. Officials suspected that these ingredients were being used in the preparation of khoya and milk cake. The department collected statutory samples of the seized milk cake and khoya and sent them to the State Food Laboratory for testing. The premises have been sealed, and further action will be taken against those responsible in accordance with the law if the laboratory report confirms adulteration, the inspector said.
The suspected adulteration is yet to be established through laboratory testing.
