CPI (M) CANDIDATE RECEIVES THREAT CALL IN THE PRESENCE OF SRIGANGANAGAR SP

Raj Sadosh/Abohar.

Beant Singh, alias Bittu—president of the Sriganganagar Tractor-Trolley Union and a candidate for Zila Parishad — received threats from gangster Vishal Pachar, alias Bablu, who allegedly demanded an extortion payment of Rs 2 crore and threatened to kill him. Most alarmingly, this threat was received by Beant Singh in the presence of Superintendent of Police (SP) Hari Shankar Yadav.

This afternoon, Beant Singh arrived with some of his supporters to meet SP Yadav. During their conversation, he began receiving a series of WhatsApp calls on his mobile phone from an international number. Being occupied, Beant Singh could not answer the calls. Shortly thereafter, a threatening voice message arrived from the same number. In the message, the caller identifying himself as Vishal Pachar, warned Beant Singh not to contest the election and demanded an extortion payment of Rs 2 crore, explicitly threatening to take his life.

The SP said that, based on the complaint filed by Beant Singh, a case regarding the threats is being registered. He added that the matter is being treated with the utmost seriousness and will be investigated thoroughly and promptly.

Speaking to the media, Beant Singh revealed that the first threat was received on the night of October 25. During a WhatsApp call from an international number, the caller identified himself as “Vishal” and allegedly warned him against contesting the election, stating that he would otherwise have to pay Rs 2 crore in extortion money. The caller challenged him, saying, “Let’s see how you contest the election; if you do, I will have you shot.”

It is worth noting that during the local body elections held in August and September, several instances of candidates being threatened by gangsters were reported. While some cases were registered, the individuals responsible for the threats have yet to be arrested.
