SUCCESSFUL RESCUE OF RED-WATTLED LAPWING CHICK

A tiny baby bird entered a shop located in Prem Nagar, Ludhiana and sat huddled in a corner in fear. The shopkeeper’s daughter, Shruti Passi, informed Dr. Sandeep Kumar Jain, President of “People For Animals” Ludhiana and ERN Member of Wildlife Trust of India, about it.

On seeing the photo sent to Dr. Jain, it was found to be a newborn chick of Red-wattled Lapwing (Titihri).

Dr. Jain said that the Red-wattled Lapwing builds its nest on the ground itself and often its chicks get separated due to noise or construction work. He asked Shruti Passi to search for the mother Lapwing or its nest nearby, so that the chick could be reunited with its mother. Even after extensive search, its mother or nest was not found nearby.

Considering the situation and giving priority to humanity and wildlife conservation, Dr. Jain immediately informed the Wildlife Department, Ludhiana. The department promptly sent its staff to the spot and took the chick with them for safe custody. After proper care, the department will release it into its natural habitat.

Dr. Jain has appealed to the citizens that if a Lapwing chick or egg is seen anywhere, do not consider it as an orphan and pick it up, but first definitely look for its mother nearby. The Red-wattled Lapwing is a protected bird under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Sanjeev Kundra and Rakesh Jain of “People For Animals” expressed their gratitude to Shruti Passi and the officials of the Wildlife Department for this commendable work.
