SGPC CHIEF, RAJA WARRING VISIT MOHANJIT IN HOSPITAL, PROTEST ANNOUNCED OUTSIDE SSP OFFICE

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Harjinder Singh Dhami and Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Saturday visited Mohanjit Singh, who was allegedly subjected to police torture after he showed a black cloth to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Dhami met Mohanjit Singh at the Civil Hospital here and assured him of all possible assistance from the SGPC.
Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, Dhami alleged that the mistreatment of the Sikh youth and the alleged disrespect to his kakars were serious matters that could not be tolerated.

He said questioning the government’s policies, functioning and social issues was the right of every citizen in a democracy and no one was entitled to take the law into their own hands or allegedly subject a person to police excesses for raising questions.

Dhami said the SGPC considered it its duty to stand by any Sikh facing injustice and assured Mohanjit Singh of every possible assistance. He said the SGPC could also arrange treatment for him at Sri Guru Ram Das Medical College, if required.

Referring to the issue of drug abuse in Punjab, Dhami alleged that while youths were continuing to lose their lives due to drugs, those raising questions and protesting against the menace were being targeted instead.
Meanwhile, Punjab Congress chief Raja Warring also visited Mohanjit Singh and his family at the hospital. Warring spoke to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the phone and facilitated a conversation between him and the victim’s family, according to Congress leaders.

Gandhi assured the family of the party’s support, they said.

Warring questioned the police’s version of the incident and alleged that the victim had suffered injuries due to police action. He warned that Congress workers would show black flags wherever Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann addressed rallies or public meetings.

Meanwhile, the newly formed Insaaf Sangharsh Committee, along with other groups and political parties, has announced a protest and gherao of the Sangrur Senior Superintendent of Police’s office from 11 am on Sunday.

The committee said the transfer of DSP Harvinder Singh Khaira and the police action against some other officials were insufficient. It demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter and strict action, including dismissal of the officials found responsible. The committee warned that its agitation would continue until its demands were met.
