MAN WHO ATTEMPTED SUICIDE OUTSIDE DC OFFICE, SANGRUR, IS HABITUAL OFFENDER FACING NINE CRIMINAL CASES: SSP DR RAVJOT GREWAL

Clarifying the facts regarding the attempted suicide outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Sangrur, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sangrur, Dr Ravjot Grewal stated that the individual involved is a habitual offender with an extensive criminal background and is currently facing as many as nine criminal cases at different police stations in the State.

The individual, identified as Jagga Singh alias Joga alias Jagseer Singh, a resident of Village Namol, Police Station Cheema, Sangrur, allegedly consumed a poisonous substance outside the DC Office, Sangrur, at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Prompt police action ensured that he was immediately taken to the Civil Hospital, Sangrur, from where he was referred to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala. His condition is currently stable and he remains under continuous medical observation.

Sharing details of his criminal antecedents, SSP Dr Ravjot Grewal revealed that Jagga Singh is a habitual offender involved in nine criminal FIRs. “He has already been convicted and sentenced in four cases—including one case under the NDPS Act and three cases under the Excise Act. In addition, four more cases under the Excise Act are under trial. Jagga Singh was also booked in a rape case at Police Station Thuliwal, in which he was acquitted,” stated the SSP Sangrur.

Addressing allegations of police inaction, the SSP stated, “The police have taken lawful cognisance of every development. Following a social media video posted by Jagga Singh on 12 September issuing threats of self-harm over a family dispute, a Daily Diary Report under Section 226 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered at Police Station Cheema.”

Further, acting on the complaint and Medico-Legal Report (MLR) of his wife, Manpreet Kaur, regarding an alleged assault and vandalism, Sangrur Police carried out spot verification and promptly registered FIR No. 125 dated 20-09-2026 under Sections 115(2), 126(2), 324(4), 331(6), 190 and 191(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Cheema against Sukhbir Singh alias Sukhi, Sabar Mistri, Aman Singh, Mukarti Singh and others.

The SSP said, “According to a complaint from the Panchayat, Jagga Singh had been politically instigated to attempt suicide. Police are investigating this aspect as well. Villagers and members of the Panchayat have stated that Jagga Singh was instigated as a part of a political conspiracy to attempt suicide in order to pressurise the police and the local Panchayat. The local Panchayat has also accused him of involvement in illegal activities.”

Reassuring the public of a fair, transparent and prompt investigation, SSP Dr Ravjot Grewal said, “Sangrur Police remain firmly committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice strictly in accordance with the facts.”
