Livasa Hospitals, a leading healthcare chain in Punjab, strengthened its commitment to orthopaedic health by hosting a conference on a unique patient case study at its Nawanshahr unit. The session highlighted a remarkable medical achievement by Dr. Shiv Dass Sidhu, an orthopaedic consultant at Livasa Hospital Nawanshahr, who successfully performed a rare and advanced surgery on a 73-year-old woman suffering from a severe osteoporotic shoulder fracture. By opting for the innovative fibular strut grafting technique over the conventional metal plate method, Dr. Sidhu not only restored the patient’s mobility but also set a new benchmark in managing complex, high-risk fractures in elderly patients.

The patient, who sustained a complicated shoulder fracture after a fall, faced significant challenges due to her weakened bone structure. Traditional surgical methods posed considerable risks, as her bones lacked the density required to securely hold metal plates. Recognizing the limitations of conventional approaches, Dr. Sidhu opted for a less common but highly effective but underutilized technique: harvesting a segment of healthy bone from the patient’s fibula to reinforce the fractured humerus. Grafting provided a mechanical advantage as it not only strengthened the bone internally but also acted as a biological stimulant for healing.

(SUBHEAD)Dr. Pawan Kumar, Director & CEO, Livasa Hospitals, applauded this innovative surgery and emphasised hospital’s dedication to orthopaedic excellence. He remarked, “India is seeing a rapid rise in osteoporosis-related fractures, particularly among aging women.

Dr. Shiv Dass Sidhu, Consultant- Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, Livasa Hospital Nawanshahr, expressed, “Orthopedics is not just about fixing bones anymore; it’s about understanding bone quality and adapting strategies to suit each patient’s unique anatomy.

While fibular strut grafting is well-documented in orthopaedic literature, it remains underutilized primarily due to the technical expertise required and the additional surgical planning involved. It is not part of routine orthopaedic practice; however, it can be the difference between success and failure for some rare cases. emphasized the importance of individualized care and innovative surgical techniques in improving patient outcomes. Cases like this highlight the importance of individualized care and surgical creativity. As for the patient, she remains a symbol of resilience — and a reminder of what’s possible when medicine meets innovation.”
