Hundreds of people representing dozens of political parties and non-profit organisations assembled at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk here last evening to pay tribute to the revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev.

Mayor Vimal Thatai, former MLA Arun Narang, City Congress president Subhash Baghla, AAP coordinator Atul Nagpal, City BJP chief Ramesh Gandhi and others said on the occasion that the revolutionaries made supreme sacrifice to free India from British rule. But, freedom faced a big challenge at the hands of drug smugglers and traffickers who were leaving no stone unturned in ruining youth in Punjab that was glorified in the pre-independence India for prosperity being the state of five rivers.

Unfortunately, the law and order agencies were not given a free hand in tackling the drug lords as the latter allegedly enjoyed shelter from political bosses or themselves fell prey to vested interests. Unless we defy all odds and support the drive against drugs, youths can’t be safe.

Raj Sadosh, who had accompanied Labour Council secretary, PD Garg in 1967 to get a statue of martyr prepared at Jaipur, shared his experience and appreciated social organisations for keeping the legacy alive. Convener Praveen Chawla thanked all for attending the programme in a big way
