A youth, who was shot outside Valmiki Mandir Dharamshala in Sant Nagar, Abohar, about three weeks ago, succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Ludhiana. The victim was the brother of Akashdeep, alias Bhalu who was known as a BJP activist but could not contest MC election.
The City-1 police had arrested one suspect, identified as Gautam Dhetarwal of Ganeshgarh, Sriganganagar— who sustained injuries during the exchange of fire and was admitted to a hospital; following initial treatment, he was referred to Faridkot. Two other suspects managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
Police had claimed that the shooting in Sant Nagar stemmed from a long-standing personal enmity of Sriganganagar based gangster Vishal Pachar group but Akashdeep rebutted it saying his family had nothing to do with Vishal Pachar.
Police later said that a pistol was recovered from the arrested suspect, Gautam Dhetarwal, while the primary weapon used to shoot Ajay Kumar has yet to be recovered, as it remains with the main perpetrator, identified as Sagar Nepali, who managed to flee the scene.
A case (FIR No. 307) has been registered at Police Station No. 1 regarding the life-threatening attack on Ajay Kumar, invoking Sections 109 and 61(2) of the BNS and the Arms Act. Sagar Nepali of Patel Nagar, Abohar, Vishal Pachar alias Boxer, Gautam Dhetarwal, and some unidentified youths had been identified in the FIR.
SC community members had staged a dharna near the Shaheed Smarak targeting the police for failure in arresting Sagar Nepali. The community leaders had demanded action on the basis of victim Ajay Kumar’s statement.
