A concerned bird lover, Gurpreet Kaur from a village of District Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, contacted Dr Sandeep K Jain, Member Emergency Relief Network of Wildlife Trust of India and President People for Animals Ludhiana reporting that a small bird was stuck to a glue pad (Rat glue trap).
She rescued the bird, but strong glue was still gripping its feet and feathers, leaving it unable to stand or fly.
On receiving the picture on WhatsApp, Dr Jain identified the bird as a Dusky Crag Martin (Ptyonoprogne concolor) – a small insectivorous wild bird, protected under the Wildlife Protection Act.
He advised not to pull the feathers forcefully and to apply common edible oil (coconut / mustard oil) on the glue-affected area. After 10-15 minutes, gently remove the softened glue with wet cotton wool.
He also corrected the feeding attempt – her family had kept biscuits near it. He explained that this species is insectivorous and does not eat biscuits, and advised to keep it in a safe, airy box and avoid unnecessary handling.
Late at night, Gurpreet informed that the glue from the feet was removed but the foot was still swollen and not in proper shape. Dr Jain advised applying Betadine or Haldi (turmeric) as an antiseptic and to keep the bird warm.
By the next morning, the bird showed improvement. However, glue was still sticking to its wings, preventing flight. Dr. Jain again advised a second gentle application of oil and slow cleaning with wet cotton.
Video received in the morning showed the bird active and attempting to move, giving hope for full recovery and release in one or two days.
Dr Jain said that Glue pads are indiscriminate killers. They are meant for rodents but trap birds, squirrels, lizards and even kittens. They cause immense suffering and death for hours. He appealed to the public to stop using glue traps and use humane alternatives. If you find a bird stuck on glue, never pull it – use edible oil and contact your nearest veterinarian or animal welfare volunteer immediately. He appreciated the compassion shown by Gurpreet and her family.
