NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR SAFAI KARAMCHARIS TAKES SUO-MOTU COGNIZANCE OF AJAY MURDER CASE

Raj Sadosh/Abohar.

In the case of the fatal shooting of Ajay Kumar in Sant Nagar, Abohar, on September 27, the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) has taken Suo-Motu cognizance and has written to the Chief Secretary of the Punjab Government and the Director General of Police (DGP) of Punjab, urging immediate intervention, an impartial investigation, and the provision of security for the victim’s family. Highlighting the gravity of the incident and the concerns raised by the deceased’s family regarding the progress of the investigation, the Commission has called upon the concerned authorities to take appropriate action.

A letter issued by Commission member Hardeep Singh Gill notes that Ajay Kumar sustained severe gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. The deceased belonged to the Valmiki/Safai Karamcharis community, and his father is also a sanitation worker.

Treating the matter with the utmost seriousness, the Commission has recommended that the investigation be entrusted to a senior police officer—one not previously involved in the case—to ensure an unbiased assessment of all facts and evidence. Furthermore, it has called for a thorough examination of the statement recorded by the deceased before his death, CCTV footage, forensic evidence, call records, and any other available material.

The letter further directs that appropriate legal action be taken against any individuals found to be involved, based on the evidence gathered. It also mandates that steps be taken in accordance with the law to identify and arrest any absconding suspects. The Commission has emphasized prioritizing the safety of the victim’s family and witnesses; it has recommended that, should there be any perceived threat, necessary protection be provided under the prevailing laws and the ‘Witness Protection Scheme, 2018’. Furthermore, it has been requested that consideration be given to providing compensation, legal aid, and other admissible relief to the victim’s family, and that a report on the steps taken in the matter be submitted to the Commission.

MLA Sandeep Jakhar welcomed the Commission’s decision to take Suo-Motu cognizance of the case. He remarked that it is deeply unfortunate that Ajay’s family is forced to struggle continuously in their pursuit of justice. Questioning the role of the Punjab Government, he asked which influential individuals or criminals the government is attempting to shield. He noted that the family’s concerns regarding the handling of the case have led to a loss of public trust in the Fazilka District Police, and the family is now demanding an impartial investigation.
