Shri H. Rajesh Prasad, Chief Secretary, UT Chandigarh on Friday, today inaugurated the 15th Chandigarh National Crafts Mela by playing the traditional drum, marking the formal opening of this vibrant celebration of India’s crafts and cultural diversity. Jointly organised by the North Zone Cultural Centre and the Chandigarh Administration, the fair brings together more than 400 craftsmen and folk artists from 22 states who are showcasing their craftsmanship, traditional art forms, and regional heritage. The event aims to preserve and promote India’s rich craft traditions while providing artisans a prominent platform to present their work to wider audiences.

Speaking at the occasion, the Chief Secretary expressed immense pleasure at the return of the Mela, highlighting that it has become one of the most eagerly awaited cultural events for the people of the Tricity. He noted the beautifully curated ambience reflecting architectural inspirations from Punjab and Rajasthan and emphasized that such festivals play a pivotal role in strengthening national unity

The Chief Secretary further underlined that the Mela is not just a cultural festival but also an important initiative that strengthens the livelihoods of artisans. He also called upon the city residents to come with families and friends to be a part of the mega event and help promote the handicraft items crafted by them.

The sprawling Kalagram on Friday resounded with the strains of some three dozen musical instruments from various states, ending up into a mesmerising musical symphony. The folk instruments of Rajasthan, Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, and others, created an ambient backdrop for the presentation, leaving the audience delirious with delight.

Up next to the symphony, was a well-choreographed presentation comprising half a dozen folk dances from several states, under the direction of renowned choreographer Sushil Sharma, which evoked a humongous response from music lovers. The slight nip in the November air could not dampen the soaring spirits of the music lovers, as Prof Amandeep Singh, an accomplished ‘Dilruba’ exponent, took the centre stage, keeping the audience entranced with the divine music.

The star performer on Saturday will be Sufi legend Kanwar Grewal will, who will dole out his hit numbers, one after the other.

Present on the occasion were Sh. Diprava Lakra, Secretary Finance UT; Sh. Swapnil M. Naik, Secretary Personnel; Sh. Nishant Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner; Sh. Sorabh Arora, Director Culture; Shri Furqan Khan, Director NZCC; along with other senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration.

Daily Mela timings: 11 am to 9.30 pm (till December 7)
