Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator, Union Territory Chandigarh, paid a surprise visit to Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh, today evening. Shri Mandip Singh Brar, Home Secretary, UT Chandigarh, accompanied him during the visit.

The Administrator first visited the newly established Emergency and Trauma Ward, where he interacted with patients and enquired about the medical facilities and services being provided to them.

Thereafter, he inspected the Gynae Emergency, Labour Room, Maternity Ward, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Emphasizing the need to strengthen maternal healthcare services, he directed the hospital authorities to enhance the capacity of the Maternity Ward.

Dr. Thami, Director Principal, GMCH-32, apprised the Administrator that a separate Maternity and Child Health Centre is expected to become operational within the next 4–5 months. Once functional, it will significantly help in regulating patient load and easing congestion in the existing Maternity Ward.

The Administrator also visited the waiting area for attendants of patients and enquired about the availability of facilities for their stay. The Director Principal informed him about the Serai being operated within the hospital premises, providing accommodation to attendants at nominal rates.

The visit underscored the Administration’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and patient-centric services in government hospitals.
