A workshop on the legal aspects of human trafficking and bonded labor was organized at the Tapovan Trust premises under the joint auspices of the Child Welfare Committee, Sriganganagar, and Urmul Rural Health Research and Development Trust.
Child Welfare Committee Chairman Joginder Kaushik was chief guest and the special guests were Labor Inspector Mamta Sihag and Anti-Human Trafficking Unit In-charge Sub-Inspector Shish Ram.
Project Coordinator Chaina Ram Bishnoi explained the workshop's objectives. Chief Guest Joginder Kaushik stated that due to Sriganganagar being the last stop for long-distance trains, crimes such as child labor, human trafficking, and begging are prevalent, as people with criminal tendencies or their victims unknowingly arrive here via train.
(SUBHEAD)Labor Inspector Mamta Sihag said that in cases of bonded labor, besides brick kilns, there is a need to work intensively on domestic workers and laborers working in other industrial units. Program Coordinator Mahabir Azad highlighted the legal aspects of the definition and elements of bonded labor.
Shish Ram shared his views on Article 23 of the Indian Constitution, which prohibits human trafficking and forced labor. Jagsir Singh Gill provided information about the vigilance committee constituted by the District Magistrate and its role. Chairperson Mahesh Periwal stated that mentally challenged women are easy targets for exploiters and the negative consequences affect them as well as their children. Juvenile Justice Board member Vikas Saraswat, Child Welfare Committee members Anand Marwal and Dr. Ram Prakash Sharma shared useful information.
