CBI ARRESTS ABSCONDER CONVICT INVOLVED IN MISAPPROPRIATION OF COMPENSATION BILLS OF NPCC LTD.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an absconder convict, Smt. Tamanna Chakma @ Tamie May, on 17.01.2026. She was convicted by Ld. Court of Special Judge, Aizawal, Mizoram along with 22 other accused persons vide judgement and Order dated 17.05.2024 and was absconding since long.

The CBI registered the instant case on 30.12.2010, against U.P Mishra, the then Zonal Manager, NPCC Ltd., Silchar (Assam) and 05 others, based on a complaint in the matter of alleged misappropriation of compensation bills of National Projects Construction Corporation Ltd. (NPCC Ltd.).

After completion of investigation, CBI filed Chargesheet on 31.07.2012 against 25 accused persons, including Smt. Tamanna Chakma.

During trial proceedings, the accused Tamanna Chakma failed to appear before the Ld. Trial Court and therefore an Arrest Warrant was issued by Ld. Trial Court. Further, persistent and sustained efforts were made to trace the accused during the course of Trial, however, she remained untraceable. After completion of the trial, the Ld. Trial Court convicted 23 accused, including the absconding accused Tamanna Chakma, on 17.05.2024.

The absconding accused Tamanna Chakma did not appear before the Ld. Trial Court even after pronouncement of the judgement.

Subsequently, based on inputs collected during field verification, physical surveillance and thorough CDR analysis, absconder Tamanna Chakma was detained by CBI Shillong team on 17.01.2026 from Geeta Nagar Police Station Area of Guwahati, Assam.
