Farmers continued blocking highways for the second day and protested against the government as their crops were affected due to non-availability of water in the canals when mercury soared at 47-degree temperature. The protesters shouted slogans against the AAP-led government.

MLA Sandeep Jakhar also sat on a dharna with the farmers. He said that the government had promised the farmers to release water in the canals by getting a major breach in the Sirhind Canal repaired within a week, but the government has completely failed in getting the needful done.(SUBHEAD)

He said that due to non-availability of water in the canals, the farmers could not sow cotton and other crops and would have to suffer financial loss. Already in summer, 80 to 90 percent of his orchards have been destroyed due to non-availability of canal water and some of the farmers were uprooting plants. He asked the government to announce compensation for the affected fruit orchards and other crops. “I will raise the issue in the Vidhan Sabha. Apart from this, pressure will also be exerted on the government to ensure such a situation is prevented in future, he said.
