The inauguration was done by Bhai Davinder Singh, Chairman of Shri Guru Harkrishan Sahib (E) Eye Hospital Trust, Sohana. Also present on the occasion were Bhai Gurmeet Singh, Secretary of the trust and Dr Gagandeep Singh, CEO of Sohana Hospital Mohali.

“One will not need to visit the hospital for getting breast cancer screening anymore. The mammography bus will visit at multiple places in tricity and peripheral areas and objective is to detect breast cancer at an early stage. The aim is to screen over 5000 women through the mobile unit this year free of cost,” said Gurmeet Singh, Secretary of the Shri Guru Harkrishan Sahib (E) Eye Hospital Trust, Sohana.

The set-up of the mobile mammography van is very similar to what is found in any clinic. In addition to the mammography equipment and workstation for the radiology technologist, there is a small waiting area, washroom, and a simple check-in process.

Dr. Sandeep Kukkar, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, Sohana Hospital Mohali said that recent studies had found that cancer cases are on a rise in tricity as compared to metro cities like Mumbai and New Delhi. An increase in weight, lack of exercise, hormone replacement therapy, the combined oral contraceptive pill, stress, and probably late work shifts are some factors that increase the risk of breast cancer. The mammography bus has one specialist oncologist along with Technical staff for real time diagnosis of Breast Cancer.”

Speaking on the occasion, Lalit Sharma, General Manager – S&M said, “The mobile Mammography Bus will be on the go throughout the week including Sundays. Initially, the objective is to screen tricity women in association with various RWAs, NGOs and corporates in the area. Sohana Hospital has a pledge to screen every strata of women against breast cancer and nip it in the bud.”
