SEMINAR ON ROLE OF INDIAN SCIENTISTS AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS IN PRE-INDEPENDENT INDIA HELD

Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45, Chandigarh, in association with Union Ministry of Culture and Chandigarh Vigyan Parishad organized a seminar on the “Role of Indian Scientists and Scientific Institutions in Pre-Independent India” here .

A slew of activities like invited talks, exhibitions on Indian scientists, and student competitions were conducted as a part of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav celebration and G-20 Presidency of India.

The seminar was organized under the able guidance of Nirmal Singh Dhillon, Chairman, Dev Samaj Managing Council and highly motivating patronship of Dr Agnese Dhillon, Secretary, Dev Samaj Managing Council.

Principal Dr Meena Chopra felicitated the guests of the seminar – Dr KS Arya, Retired Principal, DAV College, Chandigarh; Dr Jayanti Dutta, Deputy Director, UGC- HRDC, Panjab University, Chandigarh; Wing Commander Vinay Kumar(Retd.); Dr Jagdish Mehta, Fellow, Panjab University, Chandigarh, and Dr Kawal Preet of SGGS College.(SUBHEAD)

Principal Dr Meena Chopra congratulated the team of Mathematics Club and Green Plant Club for organizing the seminar and spoke about the importance and relevance of such events for disseminating awareness amongst students.

During the seminar, special emphasis was laid on the life and times of an unsung hero of Indian Science Ruchi Ram Sahni. The keynote speaker Prof KS Arya motivated the audience with his highly engaging talk on ‘Bhartiya Vigyan Parampara.’

He elaborated the units of time in Indian history and focussed on Indian culture and Ayurveda. Dr Jayanti Dutta delivered a talk on the topic ‘Role of Indian Scientists in India’s Freedom Struggle.’

She explained the difficulties faced by famous Indian scientists like JC Bose and others during the freedom struggle. Despite such difficulties, they released journals, opened industries and continued to work for the society even without salaries.

Chandigarh Vigyan Parishad, an independent state unit of Vijnana Bharti (VIBHA), displayed an exhibition on Indian scientists and their role in India’s freedom struggle.

Poster making competition on the theme ‘Scientific Temper in Indian Society,’ power-point presentation competition on the theme ‘Conserve Water: Modern Technology Innovation to Save Water’ and short-film making competition on the theme ‘Role of Indian scientists in freedom struggle’ were also conducted as a part of this celebration.

As many as 46 students from various streams of the college took part in these competitions. The seminar was a wonderful display of knowledge, stories of unsung Indian scientists and talent prevailing amongst youth. The event concluded with the encouraging words of Principal Dr Chopra. She applauded the conveners Savkirat Kaur, Dr Meenakshi Batra and the entire organizing committee for providing a platform to students to showcase their talents.
