City-1 police station incharge Sanjeev Kumar has been shifted to the district police lines.
Even when the orders issued by the district authorities said that transfers of three police officers have been made on administrative ground in the public interest, Sanjeev had courted controversies in the past three-four days. Sunil Kumar SHO Khuikhera has taken over the charge here.
After a meeting at Bishnoi Mandir here, some leaders, including SAD activists, from Balluana constituency demanded cancelling of transfer of Sanjeev who belongs to Tarmala village of Malout tehsil.
(SUBHEAD)Two youths had accused the police of torturing them at the city-1 police station here. The duo, Yashpal Singh and Robin, were admitted to the Civil Hospital on Saturday.
They said they went to the market near Nehru Park around 10 pm on Friday. While they were talking to some friends, a PCR team reached there and took away their bike saying it did not carry the mandatory security number plate.
Later, they went to the police station and requested SHO Sanjeev Kumar to release their bike. They were, however, thrashed inside the police station, they alleged.
Alleging that she was also humiliated by the cops, the youths' mother Krishna Rani had also demanded action against the “erring” cops.
A digital media operator said he had recorded victims’ statements, but that was forcibly deleted from his mobile phone and he was warned against making the story viral. SHO Sanjeev Kumar rebutted the allegations and said no one was tortured or humiliated.
A deputation of social media operators had met SSP Manjit Singh Dhesi to express resentment against Sanjeev Kumar. They said that no official had the authority to take a mobile phone from a reporter and delete the contents.
On Tuesday, some BKU activists met National Commission of Scheduled Castes chairman Vijay Sampla during his visit here and sought action against the city-1 police for allegedly harassing two youths of Dalit community during illegal detention. Sampla spoke to the Deputy Commissioner and SSP and asked them to conduct an inquiry and send him a report.
The shifting of city-1 SHO to the district police lines is being related by people here to these two incidents.
