Dr. Sandeep Kumar Jain, committee member of the Animal Welfare Board of India and former member of the Punjab State Wildlife Board, said that the decision taken in the recent meeting of the Punjab State Wildlife Board, that the wild animals damaging the crops can be hunted with .315 bore rifles is unfair.

He demanded from the government that farmers' crops should be insured and the losses should be compensated. In remote areas, farmers should also be motivated to protect their fields by affixing wire fences and financial assistance should be given for the same.

(SUBHEAD)Dr Jain said that hunting of any kind should not be allowed because under the guise of hunting, there is a possibility that other rare species may also be killed. He said that forests and wildlife in Punjab are already endangered.

National President of Vishwa Jain Sangathan Sanjay Jain, General Secretary of Punjab unit Ravinder Jain and co-convenor Rakesh Jain have said that the government should free forests of encroachments as in the absence of sufficient forests, wild animals come out to the fields for food and become victims.

They said that the decision to hunt wild animals was against the conservation of natural resources, it should be stopped immediately because there is a lot of anger among the non-violent society and animal loving people and the Punjab government should reconsider the above decision.

Notably, the rules related to license by the Punjab State Wildlife Board for 315 bore rifles have been changed. Now the license will be given in the name of the land owner only. This license will be valid only for one year. It has been made clear that the landlord will have to renew his license every year. Apart from this, the landowner will have to deposit the dead body of the animal with the Punjab StateWildlife Board department after hunting.

Punjab Chief Wildlife Warden Dharminder Sharma has said that they have allowed hunting only by 315 bore guns to ensure that the animal gets killed. “The wild animal causing damage to life and property needs to be killed, not injured,” he said.
