Taking serious cognizance of the high drama about the reported incident of two police personnel being caught by the Border Security Force in Ferozepur while carrying 2 kg of heroin hidden in a car, Punjab State BJP President Sunil Jakhar said that now the time has come to keep an eye on the “guards” engaged in the security of the people, because after forming the government in Punjab, the AAP claimed to eradicate drugs in four months.

“As all the efforts of the party have gone awry, doubts about the government's claims are deepening among the people. A video that went viral last week showed police officers dancing at a party organized by gangsters. The matter was closed simply by their transfers.

(SUBHEAD)Instead of drug smugglers, the government is busy nabbing the small peddlers. Despite claims of tightening security arrangements, not only mobile phones are being recovered during inspection in jails but the people sitting in the jails are doing drug trade unabated. It seems as if jails have become the center of drug trade. Due to political interference, the cases were suppressed by ordering a departmental inquiry into the involvement of police personnel and officers in the drug trade and alleged nexus with smugglers”, Jakhar said.

He said that the ruling party has always been against the interference of central agencies in the state, but considering the way the sixth river of drugs is flowing unhindered in Punjab, it would be better if the responsibility of dealing with it is given to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). It would also be appropriate to allow the NCB to keep an eye on the “uniformed guards”. He said that in the case of opium and heroin smuggling, till now only small fishes have been controlled, crocodiles have not been touched.
