Congress candidate Rupinder Singh Kooner “Ruby” defeated Surinder Pal Singh TT, who was sworn in as Minister of State in Rajasthan last month, in Srikaranpur constituency by 11,283 votes. Ruby got 94,950 votes against 83,667 bagged by TT who was the only Sikh face in the cabinet from Sriganganagar. District Congress president Ankur Miglani described it as a big win for Congress.
BJP rallies were addressed by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and dozens of other senior leaders to save its only Sikh face in the state cabinet. Congress top campaigners included former CM Ashok Gehlot, former Dy CM Sachin Pilot, PCC chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. RCC chief Govind Singh Dotasara was incharge of the campaign.
(SUBHEAD)Apart from BJP and Congress, Ashok Kumar of BSP, Prithvipal Singh Sandhu of Aam Aadmi Party were among the contestants. Sandhu, former district Congress president, was given a ticket by AAP within five minutes of joining the party. Sandhu lost security deposit as he got about 11 thousand votes.
The Election Commission had to postpone the election last month after Congress veteran Gurmeet Singh Kooner died during the campaign on November 19.
On December 3, a day after the Assembly poll was declared, a new schedule for the elections of Srikaranpur seat was announced.
