IPA’S POLO SEASON KICKS OFF AT CHANDIGARH POLO CLUB

PLAYERS ACROSS THE COUNTY COMPETING FOR THE MAHARAJA RANJIT SINGH TROPHY AND ZORAWAR SINGH CUP

The nationwide polo governing body – Indian Polo Association’s Polo season formally inaugurated at Chandigarh Polo Club, Khuda Lahora on Sunday The season was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner, UT Nishant Kumar Yadav (IAS) in the presence of club and IPA officials. The key feature of this season is Maharaja Ranjit Singh Trophy wherein teams from country's prestigious clubs and defense services are participating. Addressing the media, Chandigarh Polo Association’s President Dilpreet Singh Sidhu said that for the first time IPA has given Chandigarh the hosting of its two official seasons.

Polo players across the country are competing for this city’s first hosting from December 1 – 7. Zorawar Singh Cup will also be played to encourage the youth towards this game at the sidelines of the event. The second season will be held in Chandigarh from March 30 to April 5 next year.

(SUBHEAD)Sidhu said that eight teams are competing for the trophy, out of which five teams are from defense services. These include 61 Cavalry, Army Service Corps, Remount and Veterinary Corps, Artillery, Indian Navy. Apart from these, Rajasthan Polo Club, Hyderabad Polo and Riding Club and the host team – Chandigarh Polo Club are in the contention. All teams are divided in two pools. The final matches of both the categories will be played on December 7.

Through this event, IPA has given recognition to make Chandigarh as the polo destination. DC Nishant Kumar also emphasized that this centuries-old game has forayed into the modern city of Chandigarh for which the UT administration will provide all possible help to the club for the development of this game.

 The two warm-up exhibition matches were also played as players and horses tested the weather and ground conditions.
